Svaneti – Beautiful, wild and mysterious

 

Svaneti is an ancient region in the Caucasus, in the northwestern part of the country and is the highest area in the Caucasus mountain system, which people have settled. Here is one of the highest continuously inhabited settlements in Europe – Ushguli.

Svaneti is divided into Upper and Lower Svaneti and is inhabited by the Svans. They live here from the ancient times and have own spoken language.

Svaneti is a land of legend, where the towers stand as a symbol of Svaneti’s eternal freedom and inconceivable beauty.  Svanetian towers erected mainly in the 9th-12th Centuries, 

 There are more than 190 churches, 200 towers and 5 museums in Svaneti

 

 The highest mountains in Georgia, Mount Shkhara (5201 m), Tetnuldi (4974 m) and Mount Ushba (4700m) make this area unique, and the most attractive for both Georgian and foreign tourists.
This is the best place to visit in every season of year. Here is possible to ski or snowboard even in the middle of summer.  

This whole land is listed as a world heritage site by UNESCO .
